MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Felician University softball team suffered two non-conference losses on Saturday afternoon, both to members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Felician was defeated, 4-2, by West Chester University, before enduring an 11-3, five-inning setback to Slippery Rock University. Both games were played at the Ned Donkle Complex during Day 2 of the Snowbird Freeze-Out.

West Chester (2-2) is ranked No. 16 in the preseason national NCAA Division II coaches poll.

Freshman shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) was 3 for 5 with two doubles on the day for the Golden Falcons (0-4).

Playing as the visiting team, West Chester jumped out on top with two first-inning runs on a two-out, two-run double by junior shortstop Alyssa Herrion (Avon Grove, Pa.). Felician junior Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) cut the deficit in half with a solo home run in the home half of the first.

The Golden Rams struck again with two outs in the third inning. Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent a run-scoring double to center field, and pinch-runner Ali LaRosa (West Chester, Pa.) came home on a Felician throwing error on the next hitter.

Apacible had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all the Golden Falcons could muster off of WCU pitcher Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa.). The senior lefty scattered six hits without a walk in a complete-game effort.  She stranded two baserunners in the sixth inning, and recorded a groundout after Apacible doubled to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh.

Golden Falcon senior right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) (0-2) also went the distance, allowing five hits while striking out five. Golden Ram sophomore Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa.) was 2 for 3 and scored twice.

Later on Friday, Felician played in its first game of the season to be shortened by the NCAA 8-run rule. Slippery Rock had five walks and a hit batsman added to its nine hits, while three Golden Falcon errors led to five Rock unearned runs.

Leading 5-2, after three frames, Slippery Rock, the designated visiting team, took full control with four runs in the top of the fourth. Emily Nagle (Bellwood, Pa.) hit a one-out, two-run homer. The Rock (3-1) put two more runners on base before Kailey Myers (Norton, Ohio) drove home a run with a single. A Felician error made the score 9-2.

The Rock's Alexa Guglielmino (Simsbury, Conn.) hit a solo homer and Becca Roesch (Galloway, N.J.) had a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The latter became important when Golden Falcon sophomore Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run. Felician put another runner on base, but was unable to extend the game.

Apacible went 2 for 2 with a double. Slippery Rock's Myers was 3 for 3 with a double, home run and five RBI.

Felician's five-game stay in the Snowbird Freeze-Out concludes on Sunday with a noon contest against Kutztown University.
