CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician University softball team was twice victimized by late-game offense from its opponent in dropping a pair of contests during THE Spring Games, sponsored by PFX Athletics, on Monday at Legends Way Ballfields. Felician first fell to nationally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan College, 11-3, in its morning game, before being defeated on Saturday afternoon, 5-4, by Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
West Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) is ranked No. 6 in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll.
WVWC senior pitcher Alyssa Shawgo (Calhoun, Ga.) and her Golden Falcon counterpart, senior Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) were locked in a 1-0 game through four innings. The only run came on a home run by the Bobcats' Lauryn King (Chester, Va.) in the top of the second inning.
Both offenses broke through in the fifth. With two on and two outs in the visitors' half, Bobcat junior Madison Casto (Hurricane, W. Va.) lined an RBI single, and WVWC tacked on a run on a Felician error for a 3-0 lead. The Golden Falcons tied the score in the home half on Nicole Spiegelberg's (Blauvelt, N.Y.) three-run double.
The Bobcats broke the game open with a six-run sixth. King, who had doubled, scored the go-ahead run on an outfield error. Three additional hits, three walks and two hit batsmen followed. WVWC senior Sara Scoone (Naples, Fla.) belted a two-run double in the seventh for the final margin.
Shawgo gave up six hits to six different Golden Falcons, with Spiegelberg's the only one going for extra bases, in a complete-game effort, She struck out five batters and walked one.
After a break of about two hours, Felician played as the visiting team against MSUM, and left 12 runners on base in a one-run loss. Owens returned to the pitching circle and yielded two second-inning runs to the Dragons.
All of the Felician offense came in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases with none out, the Golden Falcons saw Dragon right-hander Becky Berth (Oconto, Wis.) strike out the next two hitters. But Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) forced in run with a walk, C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) stroked a two-run single to give Felician the lead, and Jaimie Parisi (Hackensack, N.J.) capped the rally with an RBI single.
The Dragons, however, came back to tally three times in the fifth, picking up three singles and a run scoring groundout and taking advantage of a Felician error. A two-out hit by Madison Paige (Diamond Bar, Calif.) put MSUM ahead for good.
The Golden Falcons put their first two batters on base in the fifth and sixth frames but did not score, and also stranded two runners in the seventh. They out-hit the Dragons, 13-6, for the game. Berth went the distance in the circle and was also 2 for 2 with a double.
Junior Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) went 3 for 4 with two doubles to pace Felician (2-9). Apacible, Parisi, and Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.) had two hits each. Owens (2-5) came up on the short end despite giving up six hits and no walks in six innings.
Felician is back in action twice again on Tuesday in Clermont, facing Ashland University at 9 a.m. and Grand Valley State University at 11:30 a.m.
