LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University women's soccer team concluded its 2018 season with a 2-1 non-conference loss to visiting Salem (W. Va.) University (formerly Salem International University) on Friday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Prior to the game, the Golden Falcons honored seniors Giana DiTonto (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), Sami Lederle (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Michelle Montefinese (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) in a Senior Day ceremony.
Felician (3-12) jumped out to an early lead. In the 10th minute, junior Jenna Fischetto (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) sent a cross parallel to the goal line from the right side. The ball caromed off the front of the goal post and right to a waiting Danielle Jenkin (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), who tapped in.
Salem out-shot the Golden Falcons, 10-2, for the first period, but put only three balls on target. All three were stopped by Felician sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township), and the hosts carried the 1-0 edge into halftime.
After the break, the Tigers continued to have the better of the play, but had difficulty putting shots on goal. Their pressure finally paid off in the 69th minute. Sophomore Thuto Ramafifi (Gaborone, Botswana) made a deft interior pass inside the 18-yard box to teammate Tamara Queiroz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/ASA College-Brooklyn). Queiroz took a touch and beat Kazenmayer from about six yards away.
Salem (10-3-1) tallied the eventual game-winner with 10:41 left in regulation time. Jocelyn Orellana's (Waterloo, Ontario) corner kick rattled around the near post area among several players from both teams. It eventually snuck inside the post, with Tiger senior Kelsea Freiling (Long Beach, Calif./Cypress College) being credited with her first of the season.
A Jenkin shot in the 84th minute sailed wide left, marking Felician's best opportunity to tie in the closing minutes.
Salem piled up advantages of 21-3 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks. Kazenmayer made six saves in a losing effort. Queiroz topped the Tiger with six shot attempts.
Felician completed its 21st season of varsity intercollegiate soccer. The Golden Falcons failed to reach the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs for just the second time in 11 seasons under current head coach Thomas Notte.
