LYNDHURST, N.J. – Freshmen Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) accumulated five hits each as Felician College won both ends of a briskly-played Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Nyack College, 8-1 and 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Polgano went 5 for 9 in the twinbill with a triple, three runs scored, four runs batted in, and two stolen bases. Strickland was 5 for 8 with two doubles and three runs scored, and also swiped two bags. Sophomore first-baseman Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) had a triple in each game for Felician (15-22, 9-7).
In Game 1, Golden Falcon senior left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) enjoyed his best outing of the season. Fowler (2-5) worked eight innings, allowing one run on six hits. He matched his career high with 11 strikeouts while issuing two walks. He carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, and surrendered a run on a double-play grounder in the eighth. Fowler also set the Felician career record for appearances with his 88th, surpassing John Calise (2007-10).
Felician picked up a two-out run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple from Price. The Golden Falcons tallied three runs on just two hits in the third, then broke the game open with three more scores in the fifth, highlighted by Polgano's two-run single. Polgano delivered an RBI single in the seventh to complete the scoring for the hosts.
Sophomore Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) joined Strickland and Polgano with two hits apiece. Yoni Rodriguez (Miramar, Fla/Somerset Academy Charter) was 2 for 4 for the Warriors (7-23, 3-7).
Felician received another strong pitching outing in Game 2, from junior right-hander John Holland (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty). After giving up a run on a wild pitch in the first inning, Holland (4-5) worked through eight frames, allowing two runs on five hits, all singles, with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Golden Falcons went ahead to stay with three runs in the fourth, the big blow coming from a two-run triple for Price down the right-field line. Price then scored on a double by LaMura. Felician tacked on two more in the fifth when Polgano delivered an RBI single, stole second base, and came home on Strickland's double.
Senior right-hander Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the season, extending his Felician career record to 14. Polgano and Strickland were each 3 for 4. Hilario Vidaurre (Arlington, Texas/Keller) and Brent James (Seligman, Ariz./Cococino) had two hits and a run scored apiece for Nyack. The nine-inning game was played in one hour, 45 minutes.
Four Felician seniors – Facendo, Fowler, Lawrence Schoer (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla./Plantation) were honored in Senior Day ceremonies following Game 2. Felician was playing in its final regular-season home games. Facendo lined a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning of Game 1 for his second career hit.
