RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University men's basketball team set the school single-game scoring record in its 112-83 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Holy Family University on Thursday night at Job Gymnasium. The game was a make-up from a Jan. 19 weather postponement.
Felician (9-10, 7-5 CACC) has won 7 of 10 games since the calendar flipped to 2019.
Junior guard Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) led five Golden Falcon double-figure scorers with 29 points, and added six rebounds in 26 minutes. Classmate Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), who logged 21 minutes, totaled 22 points, six rebounds, and a career-best seven steals. Shimou made 10 of 16 field-goal attempts.
Junior forward Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./Canterbury School) led Holy Family (11-8, 7-5) with 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Shimou netted 15 points in the contest's first six minutes as the hosts quickly opened a 26-7 lead. The spread reached 20 (37-17) with 9:02 left in the first half, and by the 1:37 mark of the period, Felician was up 57-32 following one of Wright's six three-point field goals. Junior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) made two buckets in the final minute, and the Golden Falcons went into the break ahead, 61-37.
Shimou drained a three on Felician's first possession of period two, and the Golden Falcons never allowed the Tigers to make a serious push. HFU scored seven consecutive points, capped by an Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) dunk, to pull within 73:52 with 15:00 to play, but out of a timeout, a Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) jump shot and a second-chance Wright three calmed the nerves of the home crowd.
Felician's largest bulge was 98-63 after a three by Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J./Medford Tech) at the 6:43 mark. The Golden Falcons made 15 threes, two shy of the school record set last week, and shot 48 percent from distance.
The Golden Falcons shot 53 percent overall for the night. Felician also amassed a 51-31 rebounding advantage. Senior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE) grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Felician sophomore Manny Warren Jr. (South Amboy, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) (5-6 FG, 4-4 3FG) totaled 15 points and six rebounds, and Parker finished with 13 points. Jackson accumulated 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Felician's previous scoring record was 110 in a road victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College on Feb. 24, 2015.
The Golden Falcons have a quick turnaround, playing another home CACC game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Wilmington (Del.) University.
