RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University closed with a 16-1 run over the final 4 ½ minutes to earn a 91-87 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Post University on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (12-11, 10-6 CACC), which matched its victory total from last season, gained a split of the season series against the Eagles.
With the win, combined with other league results on Tuesday, Felician earned a spot in the 2019 CACC Championship tournament. The fourth-place Golden Falcons are four games ahead of both Post and Concordia (N.Y.) College in the CACC North Division, and all three teams have three games remaining. Felician will participate in a quarterfinal contest on Tue., Mar. 5, with site and opponent to be determined.
Felician reaches postseason play for the second consecutive year under head coach Ivan Lewis and for the 13th occasion in its 20 years as a CACC member.
Freshman swingman Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) led the Golden Falcons with 23 points on Tuesday. Felician survived an onslaught from Post junior guard D.J. Jarrett (Waterbury, Conn./John F. Kennedy), who totaled 32 points, including 21 in the second half, and sank nine three-point field goals.
Felician ended the first half with a 12-2 spurt, capped by a last-second tip-in by Dee-End McRae (Irvington, N.J./Newark Central), to carry a 50-40 edge into halftime. Once the second half began, however, the Eagles quickly turned the tables. Post outscored its hosts, 21-1, over the first five minutes of the period to take a 10-point lead. The Golden Falcons committed six turnovers and burned two timeouts during that stretch.
The Eagles' largest bulge came at 71-57 following a Jarrett three-pointer with 11:31 to play. At the 4:45 mark, Post was still ahead by 11 after a three-pointer by senior Tamas Okros (Bristol, England/SGS College. But the visitors did not make another field goal for the duration of the contest.
Felician took the lead for good, 88-87 when Jackson rebounded a Post miss and found fellow freshman Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) in stride for a transition layup with 2:20 to play. In all, the Golden Falcons obtained defensive stops on the last 10 Eagle possessions of the game.
Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) totaled 12 points, and three other Golden Falcons – Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J./Medford Tech), Marry Warren Jr. (South Amboy, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) (six assists) and McRae (eight rebounds, 5-7 FG) – picked up 10 apiece. Senior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE) had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
