RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior guard Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead Felician University to an 83-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician earned a sweep of its two-game season series with the Clippers.
Wright capped his performance with a transition layup with 45.4 seconds remaining in the contest. The two points pushed his collegiate total to an even 1,000. He is the 10th Felician male to reach the millennial milestone in the program's 23-year history, and does so in his 75th game.
With the victory, the Golden Falcons (13-11, 11-6 CACC) surpass last year's win total. Felician has its most victories in a season since completing 2010-11 with a 14-13 record, and its highest total of CACC wins since going 14-4 in its league championship season of 2009-10.
Felician accumulated a 48-40 rebounding edge on the day. Senior forward Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE) compiled 14 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman swingman Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) totaled 14 points and 13 boards. Williams turned in his fifth "double-double" of the season and Jackson the first of his collegiate career.
Both sides shot less than 35 percent from the floor in the first period. The lead changed hands eight times, the last on a Williams jumper with 1:21 remaining to allow the hosts to enter intermission ahead, 30-29.
With 13:10 to play in regulation, Felician was clinging to a one-point lead after a successful jump shot by Concordia junior Michael Demello (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains). Junior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) converted a layup on the Golden Falcons' next possession, touching off a game-changing 12-0 run for the hosts.
The Clippers (9-17, 6-11) never came closer than a nine-point deficit in the final nine minutes. But at that juncture, Wright's point total stood at 13, and it looked as if he would have to pursue 1,000 points on the road next Wednesday. But he made a transition layup for a 61-50 edge at 7:42, the canned three-point field goals on three consecutive Golden Falcon possessions for a 70-54 edge at 5:43 to give him 24 points.
Wright's milestone quickly became the only drama left in the game. He missed on a three-point attempt with 1:21 remaining, but when Concordia scored in transition on the other end, an alert Jackson quickly grabbed the ball and threw a baseball pass inbounds to Wright at midcourt. Wright drove to the basket from the left wing and beat an oncoming defender to the rim for point number 1,000.
Demello led Concordia with 15 points. Freshman Devon Sims (Centerville, Va./Potomac) (eight rebounds) and sophomore Jared Young (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) came off the bench to net 12 each for the Clippers. Felician freshman Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) had 15 points and five assists.
Felician has two regular-season games remaining. On Wednesday it travels to Rockland County to face Dominican (N.Y.) College at 7:30 p.m.
