LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University men's lacrosse team fell behind, 5-0, after six-plus minutes and never recovered, dropping a 16-2 non-conference decision to the visiting University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Felician (0-6) was playing its 2019 home opener. The game was a make-up from a Feb. 20 snow-out.
Senior attack Alan Singleton (Montreal, Quebec/Pierrefonds Comprehensive) led District of Columbia (4-3) with seven points on four goals and three assists. Senior attack Edmund Taylor (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) also recorded four goals for the Firebirds. Sophomore Jefferson Jacob (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) and junior transfer Ausar Wright (Pemberton, N.J./Ewing) found the cage for the Golden Falcons.
Senior Syrrus Nash (Syracuse, N.Y./Tully) set the tone for UDC, scoring 90 seconds into the contest. After tallying five times in the first 6:08, the Firebirds took full control when Taylor registered three goals in the final 4:16 of the first period, including one with 0:03 showing on the clock.
Felician trailed, 10-0, at halftime. The Golden Falcons got off only eight shots before intermission, putting half of them on frame.
UDC kept the Golden Falcons off the scoreboard until 11:20 remained in the game, when Jacob sent home an unassisted score with his team trailing 13-0.
Felician sophomore goalkeeper Pat Hemmer (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) made a season-high 18 saves in 53 minutes. Jacob and Jose McLean-Byrd (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) had four ground balls apiece for the hosts. Felician was out-shot, 45-17, for the night and committed 31 turnovers.
The Golden Falcons face Davis & Elkins College on Saturday at noon in Elkins, W. Va.
