PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Felician University was the first team on the scoreboard but could not sustain its attack in a 22-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's lacrosse loss to host Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday night at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Wednesday's contest was the 2019 CACC opener for both schools. Chestnut Hill (6-4, 1-0 CACC) received votes in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll.
Sophomore Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and senior Casey Brown (Havre de Grace, Md.) each registered four goals and two assists for the Griffins. CHC junior Scott Wilden (Wexford, Pa.) also scored four times.
Sophomore midfielder James D'Albora (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave Felician (0-9, 0-1) the early lead with an unassisted goal one minute, 26 seconds, into the action. The Griffins tied the score at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter and moved ahead for good on a man-up goal with 5:15 left. But despite out-shooting their guests, 14-4, the Griffins exited the quarter with just that 2-1 edge.
The score stood at 4-1 midway through the second period. But the Golden Falcons, who played just over half as many players as the Griffins, began to show signs of fatigue. Chestnut Hill found the cage four times in the half's final 4:02 and entered the break ahead, 8-1.
The Griffins kept Felician from scoring again, with goalkeepers Austin Jones (Courtice, Ontario) and Stephen Hogan Jr. (Doylestown, Pa.) combining for eight saves. Felician sophomore goalie Pat Hemmer (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the visitors with four ground balls to go along with his 11 saves in 45 minutes,
The Griffins piled up advantages of 55-15 in shots and 45-17 in ground balls. Sophomore Stephen Lopuzzo (Ringoes, N.J.) was 14 for 18 from the faceoff spot and added seven ground balls.
Felician hosts defending CACC champion Georgian Court University on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lyndhurst, N.J.
