LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University softball team was defeated twice by visiting Mercy College during a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Mercy claimed a 13-3, five-inning Game 1 victory before winning the nightcap, 5-4.

Monday's games were originally scheduled to be hosted by the Mavericks last week. After a rainout, Felician provided the venue for the make-up date. Mercy, however, batted last in both games.

Senior first baseman Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) paced the Maverick offense, enjoying a 5 for 8 day.

Mercy entered the day leading the Division II East Region with a .342 team batting average and showed off its offensive might during Game 1. In just four offensive innings, the Mavericks collected 14 base hits.

Felician (7-16) jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead, using an RBI single by Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and a two-run double from Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson). But Mercy took the lead for good in the home half on a grand slam home run by junior Erica Handegard (Reno, Nev./Earl Wooster).

After scoring twice in the third inning, the Mavericks put the game away with a seven-run fourth. Mercy picked up six hits in the frame and used four walks and a sacrifice fly as well. When Maverick senior pitcher Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) retired the Golden Falcons in order in the fifth, the game was halted on the NCAA eight-run rule.

Gorman (2-1) yielded two earned runs on five hits in her five innings of work. Stevens was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Handegard went 2 for 2 plus a sacrifice fly and drove in five runs.

The nightcap was decided on a walkoff single by Stevens in the bottom of the seventh inning. Felician had evened the score in the sixth on a run-scoring double by freshman Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley). But Maverick senior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Enterprise) was hit by a pitch to start the seventh and moved up on a walk. One out later, Stevens singled to right field and Newham barely eluded the tag of Felician catcher Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) on the throw from the outfield to end the contest.

Freshman righty Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) (5-4) took a complete-game loss for the Golden Falcons. In 6 1/3 innings, she allowed eight hits, struck out five batters, and walked three. Lorch and Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) each had two hits and an RBI. Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) knocked in three runs for Mercy (11-7).

Felician returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action when it hosts Caldwell University on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
