BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Felician University women's basketball team put four scorers in double figures – three of them freshmen – but came up on the short end of a 71-66 non-conference, neutral-site decision to Elizabeth City State University on Friday evening at the de Hoernle Center on the campus of Lynn University.
Felician and Elizabeth City State were meeting for the first time. The Vikings hail from Elizabeth City, N.C., and play out of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Felician freshman swing player Tiara Mahorn (Irvington, N.J.) scored a season-high 14 points. Mahorn, who shot 5 for 7 from the floor, played only 19 minutes before being disqualified due to fouls in the early stages of the fourth period. She also had three steals. Golden Falcon senior guard Taliyah Brisco (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) totaled 14 points and three assists.
ECSU (5-7) was powered by the inside-outside combination of senior forward Devona Stell (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore guard Asia Deal (Norfolk, Va.). Deal's 22 points, five assists and six steals were all game highs, while the 6-foot-3 Stell accumulated 20 points and 18 rebounds.
Mahorn beat the first-period buzzer with a three-point field goal, but the Golden Falcons were still behind by an 18-13 count. Consecutive layups by ECSU junior Ny'Asia Davis (Starke, Fla.) to start the second quarter gave the Vikings a nine-point spread, but Felician recovered to net the contest's next eight points. With three minutes, 36 seconds, left until halftime, a Stell putback restored a seven-point edge for ECSU, and the Vikings carried that same margin, 36-29, into the break.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Golden Falcon freshman Haylee Ramirez (Jersey City, N.J.) cut her side's nine-point deficit to 40-37 in the early portion of the third quarter. The only scoring for the next 2 ½ minutes was Briana Lee's (Jersey City, N.J.) second-chance layup for the Golden Falcons at the 6:16 mark. Later, Brisco answered a Stell jumper with a tying trifecta, and the schools exited the period even, 51-51.
But Felician never led in the fourth. Both teams started the quarter slowly on offense, and ECSU led, 58-55, as the game neared the 5:00 mark. But a Davis putback and a Tiffany McCarter (Raleigh, N.C.) jumper, the latter with 3:45 remaining, placed the Golden Falcons in catch-up mode. Three times Felician got back to within two points but could not get the needed defensive stop. Nyasia Blango (Havelock, N.C.) broke Felician's back with a driving layup at 0:49 for a 68-64 Viking edge, and ECSU was 3 for 4 at the foul line thereafter.
Felician went 5 for 18 from the field (28 percent) in the fourth period.
Ramirez finished with 13 points and six rebounds and Lee added 12 points for Felician (1-8), which was outscored, 17-6, at the foul line. The 6-foot-4 Davis tallied 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in 17 minutes off the Viking bench. ECSU piled up a 46-32 rebounding ege.
The Golden Falcons play their final non-league game of 2019-20 on Saturday when the face Lynn at 5 p.m. in the de Hoernle Center.
