RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's basketball team received game highs of 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots from freshman swing player Briana Lee (Jersey City, N.J./Irvington) but was defeated, 75-55, by visiting Caldwell University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday evening at Job Gymnasium.
Felician was playing its final home game of 2019-20 and celebrated Senior Night. Before the largest home crowd of the season, Felician President Dr. Anne M. Prisco was on hand to help honor Golden Falcon seniors Taliyah Brisco (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Brianna Lawrence (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) in a pregame ceremony. Brisco logged 35 minutes and recorded five points, two blocks and two steals. Lawrence was unable to play in the game due to injury.
Lee fouled out with 26 seconds remaining but to that point had played the entire game. She was 10 for 21 from the field and 3 for 3 at the foul line and added two assists and two steals. She was the only Golden Falcon to score in double figures. Felician freshman forward Tiara Mahorn (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) registered nine points and four rebounds.
The victory assured Caldwell (8-19, 8-10 CACC) of a spot in next week's CACC Championship tournament and completed a two-game season series sweep of Felician for the Cougars. Freshman forward Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland/Charnwood College) led the visitors with 17 points and added six rebounds.
After taking a 3-2 lead in the game's first minute, Caldwell never trailed again. The Cougars led by as many as nine points in the first quarter and 20-13 at period's end. During the second, three-point field goals by Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain/IES Lioixa) and Imogen Cook (North Berwick, Scotland/Charnwood College) and a Morrison layup swelled a 27-22 Cougar edge into a 13-point bulge. On the strength of a Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa./Westtown) three-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer, the visitors carried a 40-28 lead into the intermission.
The Golden Falcons sliced their deficit back to five on two more occasions in the third quarter but never drew closer. Ahead, 45-40, after a Lee layup with 5:38 left in the third, Caldwell held Felician scoreless for the next four minutes and maintained a 56-47 spread after three periods.
Felician sophomore Briana Boyd (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored the first points of the fourth period, but another Golden Falcon offensive dry spell followed. Caldwell put the game away with an 11-0 run lasting six minutes. By the time Lee broke the spell with a layup at the 3:25 mark, her team trailed, 67-51. The final 20-point margin was the Cougars' largest of the evening.
Caldwell canned 10 three-pointers and held the Golden Falcons to a 1-for-19 night from distance. Cougar senior Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three steals and Brown added 12 points, five assists and four steals.
Redshirt freshman Damia Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Joseph) had eight points, six rebounds and three steals in 16 minutes off the Felician bench.
The Golden Falcons (4-21, 3-15) conclude their season with a CACC contest at Georgian Court University on Saturday at noon in Lakewood, N.J.
