PHILADELPHIA – Felician University failed to hold a pair of mid-set leads before succumbing to host Holy Family University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-12) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball action on Wednesday night at the Campus Center Gymnasium. The match marked the beginning of 2018 CACC play for both schools.
Freshman outside hitter Kahea Aea (Mililani, Hawaii) hit .367 and led Felician (0-4, 0-1 CACC) with 14 kills. Holy Family senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa.) put down 20 kills with seven digs and three aces.
The Golden Falcons started the match strong, building an 8-3 Set 1 lead. Holy Family (3-4, 1-0) closed to a 12-12 tie, but Felician won the next three rallies. Once again the Tigers roared back, taking their first lead at 17-16 on a kill by Tayana Bennett (Philadelphia, Pa.). An Aea kill for the side-out evened the set once again.
HFU rolled off four consecutive points, only to see the Golden Falcons respond with the next five to move ahead, 22-21. The Tigers put together three rallies for a 24-22 edge. Felician saved one set point, but a Caitlin Griffin (St. Paul, Minn.) kill gave the hosts the set.
Holy Family erased an 11-7 Felician Set 2 advantage by scoring the next six points. In another back-and-forth affair, a block by Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J.) put the visitors up, 18-15. Wassel produced all three of her aces during a run of eight consecutive Tiger points, and they closed out the set shortly thereafter.
The Tigers hit .414 and held the visitors to a negative attack percentage in their lopsided Set 3 triumph to complete the match.
Holy Family freshman setter Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa) had 37 assists and nine digs while guiding her side to a .286 attack percentage for the night. Tiger sophomore Carly Covington (Delmar, Md.) produced 11 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore libero MaryGrace Puryear (Cranford, N.J.) paced the Felician defense with nine digs.
Felician plays its home opener when it entertains Assumption College on Saturday at noon in Rutherford, N.J.
