WATERBURY, Conn. – The Felician University women's volleyball team concluded its stay at the two-day, six-team Eagles Invitational, hosted by Post University, with two non-conference losses on Sunday at the Drubner Athletic Center. Felician took its first set of the day before falling, 3-1 to the University of Bridgeport in its morning match and 3-0 to Saint Anselm College later Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Sloan (West Caldwell, N.J.) produced 10 kills in each match for Felician (1-7).
The Golden Falcons played tightly with unbeaten Bridgeport (5-0) for most of the morning before bowing 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-4. Felician held the Purple Knights to a negative attack percentage while claiming the first set but failed to secure a 22-17 Set 2 lead to allow Bridgeport to even the match.
The Knights were ahead by as much as 17-10 in Set 3. Felician, however, battled all the way back, and evened the score at 24-24 on a Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J.) kill and a UB violation. A Morgan Knight (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) kill created a set point for Bridgeport, however, and teammate Amanda Keller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) put down an attack during the next point to give her team the pivotal Set 3 win.
The Purple Knights were dominant in Set 4. They won the first 11 rallies, including four aces by Klein Johnson (San Antonio, Texas), and hit .692 to wrap up the match.
Edwards finished with 12 kills and 10 digs and Sloan had 10 kills and 12 digs for Felician. Golden Falcon sophomore libero Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii) led all players with 24 digs. Bridgeport came up with 20 aces, led by eight (with 14 digs) from Johnson. Knight and Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) (.464, eight digs) had 13 kills apiece.
Saint Anselm (2-5) hit .368 in defeating the Golden Falcons 25-17, 25-18, 25-13 on Sunday afternoon during the final appearance in the tournament for both schools. Setter Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) directed the offense, racking up 32 assists and seven digs. Her favorite targets were Nique D'Ancona (Corte Madera, Calif.) (.476, 12 kills) and Madison Sollows (Barnstable, Mass.) (.444, 10 kills).
Sloan was the only attacker to reach double figures for the Golden Falcons. Senior Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif.) totaled 13 assists and four digs in two sets, and defensive specialist Alondra Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) posted eight digs and three assists.
The Golden Falcons play both Bridgeport and Saint Anselm again next weekend in Springfield, Mass., during the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by American International College. But first, Felician begins 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action with a Wednesday night match at Dominican (N.Y.) College.
