SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Felician University women's volleyball team was unsuccessful during both of its non-conference outings on Friday while participating in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International College at Butova Gymnasium. Felician lost a 3-0 decision to host AIC in the afternoon before dropping its evening match to the University of Bridgeport, also by a 3-0 count.
Senior outside hitter Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J.) combined for 20 kills on the day for the Golden Falcons (2-9). Felician freshman opposite hitter Tabatha Wagner (Wabash, Ind.) recorded a total of 17 kills in the two matches.
The Yellow Jackets (1-8) claimed a 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 victory. AIC led most of Set 1 but had to recover from an early Felician Set 2 edge. After gaining the two-sets-to-none advantage, the hosts captured eight of the match's final nine rallies to take set and the match. AIC hit .406 in the third set and .281 for the match.
Junior outside Andrea Serra (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Senior Jana Potic (Belgrade, Serbia) registered nine kills, and freshman setter Naomi Eckert (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) totaled 28 assists and seven digs. Edwards paced Felician with 11 kills and six digs, while Wagner put down eight kills.
The Golden Falcons were meeting East Coast Conference power Bridgeport (9-1) for the second time in as many weekends. After two difficult set losses, Felician was unable to extend the match after a tight third set, falling 25-19, 25-12, 29-27.
The Purple Knights posted a combined .370 attack percentage in capturing the first two sets. Set three saw Felician lead by as much as 20-13 after consecutive kills by Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii), Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif.) and Wagner. Bridgeport claimed the next four rallies before committing an error to still trail, 21-17.
Felician gained two chances to close out the set after moving ahead, 24-22. But the Purple Knights survived with kills from Carly Killorin (Centennial, Colo.) and Morgan Knight (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). The Golden Falcons saved three match points, but their longest set of 2019, along with the match, ended with a kill from Bridgeport senior middle Makayla Maroney (Parker, Colo.).
Senior outside Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) led all players with 14 kills and added nine digs for Bridgeport. Wagner (12 digs) and Edwards (eight digs) put down nine kills each for Felician. Golden Falcon sophomore libero Alonda Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) amassed a season-high 20 digs.
Felician faces a pair of opponents from the Northeast 10 Conference during Saturday's portion of the event – Saint Anselm College at 11 a.m. and Assumption College at 3 p.m.
