SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Felician University was on the short end of 3-0 non-conference women's volleyball scores to Saint Anselm College and Assumption College on Saturday during the second and final day of play in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International College at Butova Gymnasium.
Freshman opposite hitter Tabatha Wagner (Wabash, Ind.) led Felician on the day with 13 total kills. The Golden Falcons dropped all four of their matches in the event and fell to 2-11 on the season.
Felican's Saturday began with a late-morning match-up with Saint Anselm, its second meeting with the Hawks in as many weekends. Just as it did last week in Waterbury, Conn., Saint Anselm earned a straight-set victory, this time churning out a 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 triumph.
The Hawks (7-5) posted a team attack percentage of .324. They piled up statistical advantages of 57-43 in digs, 6-2 in blocks, and 8-3 in aces.
After Wagner opened the match with a kill, Felician never led again in either of the first two sets. The Golden Falcons jumped out to a 7-2 Set 3 edge, and were ahead as late as 22-20, only to see the Hawks win the match's final five rallies.
Junior middle blocker Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) hit .454 with 13 kills and five aces for Saint Anselm. Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii) topped a balanced Felician offense with seven kills, while Wagner and Maddie Sloan (West Caldwell, N.J.) (seven digs) had six each.
Assumption gained a measure of revenge for a loss to the Golden Falcons last year in Rutherford, capturing a 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 decision. Wagner totaled seven kills, five digs and two aces in defeat.
The Greyhounds won seven of the final nine points to come back to take Set 1, then closed out Set 2 with a 3-0 spurt. The Golden Falcons were ahead, 6-1 in the third set, but Assumption roared back for a 16-12 lead and never trailed again.
Assumption (1-7) received nine kills and five blocks from sophomore middle Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn.), while Greyhound libero Alexandra Krawczyk (East Patchogue, N.Y.) amassed 20 digs. Sloan recorded six kills and 11 digs and senior Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif.) had four kills, 16 assists and nine digs for Felician.
Felician plays its 2019 home opener on Tuesday, entertaining Bloomfield College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at 7 p.m. in Rutherford.
