RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Senior outside hitter Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) recorded 13 kills and 15 digs to help lead Felician University to a 3-1 (25-23, 9-25, 25-21, 25-22) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over visiting Bloomfield College on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Edwards recorded her third "double-double" of the season.
The match was Felician's 2019 home opener and the first league contest of the year for Bloomfield (2-4, 0-1 CACC). The Golden Falcons matched the best CACC start in program history and are 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2008.
Freshman opposite hitter Tabatha Wagner (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) added nine kills for Felician (3-11, 2-0). Bloomfield senior outside Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, Texas/Canutillo) hit .341 with a match-high 18 kills and also had nine digs.
After Felician captured the final two points of the first set, the Bears roared back to hit .393 during their lopsided Set 2 victory. The pivotal third set was tied on 10 occasions, but the Golden Falcons leveraged several mid-set mistakes by the visitors to eventually open a 21-17 edge. Kills by Edwards and Wagner put the hosts on top, 24-19, and while the Bears saved two set points, another Wagner kill gave Felician the 2-1 advantage in the match.
Felician jumped out on top of Set 4, 12-6. Twice during the set, Bloomfield chopped seven-point deficits to two, the final time at 22-20. Golden Falcon duo Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) and Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michael's) teamed for a block to stop the streak, and four rallies later, Martinez paired with fellow freshman Catherine Lentsch (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) on another block to end the match one hour, 47 minutes, after the first serve.
Martinez, Felician's setter, turned in her ninth double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs. The Golden Falcons received a match-high 23 digs from sophomore libero Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha). Senior Jandra Fabian (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/P.M. Rafaela Ybarra) amassed nine kills, 16 digs and six blocks in defeat for Bloomfield.
Felician plays for three consecutive days beginning with a conference match on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Caldwell University.
