RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team extended its school record winning streak to six matches with a 3-2 (25-17, 17-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. The match was played during the Felician Family Fall Festival as part of the University's Homecoming weekend.
Felician tied the program records for most five-set matches (7) and most five-set victories (4) in a season. Golden Falcon sophomore outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) recorded 15 kills and 18 digs and senior opposite hitter Kali Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) turned in 14 kills and five blocks.
The Golden Falcons (9-12, 7-1 CACC) extended the best league start in their history and maintained sole possession of first place in the CACC North Division. At 7-1, Felician is 1 ½ games ahead of Bloomfield College.
Guided by freshman setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michael's), Felician hit .201 during Saturday's match. Martinez amassed four kills, 43 assists and 17 digs, and helped put three Golden Falcon attackers in double figures in kills. Senior outside Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) totaled 10 kills and 15 digs, her seventh double-double in eight conference matches.
After the sides split identical 25-17 scores, Felician extended a 10-8 Set 3 lead to 16-9 and never saw its edge dip under five points the rest of the Set. But in the fourth, the Griffins flipped the script, jumping out in front, 13-5. The Golden Falcons came as close as 19-16 and 23-20 but could not prevent CHC from forcing a fifth set.
Felician's defensive prevailed in the decider. The Golden Falcons helped force nine Griffin attack errors during Set 5, blocking four of them. With the hosts ahead, 14-10, Chestnut Hill saved three match points before sending an attempted overpass into the net to hand Felician the victory. The match lasted one hour, 53 minutes.
In defeat, Chestnut Hill (8-9, 5-4) received a triple-double from setter/opposite Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School [Pa.]). The freshman produced 11 kills, 25 assists and 15 digs. Griffin junior Corinne Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Plymouth Whitemarsh [Pa.]) led all players on the day with 18 kills and added five blocks.
Sophomore libero Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha) paced the Felician defense with 23 digs. She added five assists, three aces and her first two kills of the season.
Felician begins its second tour around the CACC North when it travels to Bloomfield College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
