RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's cross-country team is listed at No. 7 in the most recent United States Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region ranking, the USTFCCCA released on Tuesday.
Felician is recognized regionally for the third week this season. The Golden Falcons debuted at No. 9 in the Sept. 17 ranking, and after a two-week hiatus, returned at No. 10 last week. The current No. 7 regional ranking is believed to be a Felician record for any women's sport since the athletics program joined the NCAA in the fall of 2002.
The Golden Falcons have never been ranked in the regional top 10 in women's cross-country before this season. More information is available at http://www.ustfccca.org/2019/10/featured/2019-ncaa-dii-cross-country-regional-rankings-week-5.
The Golden Falcons are coming off a second-place finish out of 13 schools at the Jack Saint Clair Memorial Invitational, hosted by the Jefferson Rams on Oct. 12 at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pa. Felician won a key head-to-head with the fellow regionally-ranked Rams, who were third in the meet. Golden Falcon sophomore Shayla Morales (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and freshman Ashley Linares (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual results out of 122 entrants.
The Golden Falcons have just one senior – team captain Jane Burgoyne (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) – among their usual top seven runners. Junior Vanessa Saiboo (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) has been a key to the Golden Falcons' surge, consistently taking three to seven minutes off her year-over-year times.
The NCAA Division II East Region consists of the CACC, East Coast Conference and Northeast 10 Conference. There are 36 schools in the region that sponsor women's cross-country.
The USTFCCCA Regional Cross-Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams' strength with current season results in determining a rank-order of squad potential.
Felician is next in action on Saturday at the St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College Invitational. The race will held at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, N.Y.
